Shane Runkle #DO1861
Polk Correctional Institute
10800 Evans Road
Polk City, FL. 33868

Prison is a lonely place. No matter how many people surround me here, I feel utterly alone. I made terrible choices, did bad things and am baffled today by my ability to justify such behavior then. I understood so little about what life meant and even worse, I had no idea the death of my ignorance. I thought I was smart, but I was really just a fool stumbling my way through a life I didn't appreciate.

Time for reflection and self-improvement are abundant here. My old self wouldn't recognize the new me and that's good because I wouldn't want anything to do with him. He partied and wasted his life. I design web pages and write computer programs. He got high to escape his life. I exercise and read/write fiction to enrich mine. He wallowed in self-pity because of the emptiness of his life. I endeavor to make the best of the one I have now. I remain imperfect but strive to be a better man each day.

If you're looking for a friend with a different perspective, if you can see beyond a person's past and let the here-and-now define them, I have an open mind. I'm a good listener, and the difference you will make in my life if you write would be incalculable.

Below is a poem by Shane

Do you think no one cares?
Does it feel like no one listens?
That no one understands?
I am no one.
