One day a friend of mine asked me a thought provoking question, “can a person truly be happy in prison?“ The question staggered me. My friend wasn’t looking for an answer, rather he wanted me to contemplate on it. Well, it has been two years since my friend asked me that question, and I have spent sleepless nights searching for an answer. I finally realized that true happiness is impossible to obtain unless the incarcerated citizen is made relevant by members from the outside. Prison hijacks the human imagination; and it is only through the contour of friendship that the semblance of happiness can exist. This is the case for me. I have been incarcerated for 32 years. Within that time, I have done much reflection, introspection, and examination. I have obtained my GED, tutored men with special needs, mentored violent youth offenders, facilitated classes on non-Dash violent communication, and conflict resolution. In addition, I work as a prisoner observation aid, i.e. observing men who are at risk of suicidal behavior. I am in enrolled in Calvin University, studying to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in community leadership with a minor in social work. But all of these accomplishments are insignificant without friends to share the success with. So in essence, friendship is the key component to a person’s in happiness in prison. Without it, it is like a ship on dry land. This is why I’m seeking a friend, to flourish spiritually and emotionally. Date of Birth: 2-10-69
